Trial rolled into a yearly charge, no warning

Took the 7-day Super trial. The screen said I'd be reminded before it ended. Woke up on day seven to a full annual charge. Duolingo told me to ask Apple, Apple told me Duolingo has to approve it. Round and round. Still out the money.

Hi Ryan, sorry for the runaround. Trial reminders go out from the app store you subscribed through, but we can review your case ourselves. Please reply to the message we've sent with your order ID.

Two years of daily Spanish and it works

My 700-day streak got me from nothing to holding a real conversation in Mexico. The gamification is silly but it keeps me showing up. Super is worth it if you actually use it daily. Not a replacement for speaking to people, but a great foundation.

Free version is now two lessons then wait

The new energy system means I can do about two lessons before I'm locked out for hours or pushed to pay. Every screen is a Super advert. I was halfway through German and it's become unusable unless you subscribe. Deleted after four years.

Cancelled family plan, charged anyway

Cancelled our family renewal months in advance, or so the app said. Next year the full amount came out. Support form went unanswered for two weeks; the only reply pointed me to Google Play. Kids enjoyed the app, but the billing side is a trap.

Great for beginners, stalls at intermediate

Italian course tops out around A2 while Spanish goes much further. After finishing it twice there's nothing new, just repetition. Flashcards without context don't teach grammar. If you're starting from scratch it's fun; if you want depth you'll outgrow it.

Bug reported six times, zero response

Paid for Super, then the app started freezing mid-lesson on both browsers and my laptop. Sent feedback, was told to clear cookies, did that, nothing. Six more messages, silence. Cancelled but no refund because 'it's non-refundable'. Their bug, my loss.

Fun, cheap, and my French has improved

I do ten minutes on the train each morning. The owl guilt-trips are annoying but effective. Speech recognition marks me wrong sometimes and the English is very American, but for the price of a coffee a month it's decent value.

Son's trial charged £89.99, refund refused

My 15-year-old used the app for GCSE homework and started a trial without realising it converted. No reminder e-mail, then £89.99 gone. Apple declined the refund and Duolingo says it's Apple's decision. Nobody will take responsibility.
